About the lab?

We focus on isolating and characterizing diverse Streptomyces strains from the unique ecosystem of Chilika Lake, Odisha, India, which is known for its rich microbial biodiversity. These strains are explored for their ability to degrade chitin-rich waste such as shrimp and crab shells, contributing to environmentally sustainable bioremediation strategies. In addition, we study their potential for producing industrially important enzymes, including chitinases and proteases, which have applications in agriculture, biotechnology, and waste management. Furthermore, the plant growth–promoting traits of these Streptomyces strains, such as phytohormone production, nutrient solubilization, and biocontrol activity against plant pathogens, are evaluated to support sustainable agriculture and soil health improvement.
